Garbage can lids

January 7th, 2015 at 07:02 pm

Why is it that the hardware stores (at least the big ones, like HD and Lowes) won't let you buy just the lid to a garbage can. I think they could make a fortune!

We lost our lid last night. This isn't the first time this has happened to us! It's possible it's buried somewhere under the snow, but it's location is not apparent. One time when we lost it, I offered to buy the entire garbage can at HD to get the lid, but wanted to leave the garbage can at the store because I didn't need it. The manager thought I was crazy and eventually just let me have a lid for free. Again, I don't understand why they don't just sell replacement lids.

I thought about trying for another free lid this morning, but honestly didn't have the time/energy, so I ordered a new one from Amazon instead. Even if we find the old one, it'll be nice to have a spare. Our county doesn't let us leash the lid to the can, so it will likely continue to happen. Maybe bricks on top of the lid would do the trick?

It would be a huge money maker! Our garbage men one day decided to throw our lids into the middle of our front yard, where they were surrounded by 8" of snow plus drifts at least twice that high. Suffice it to say, by the time we got to them they'd been buried under the snow all winter and cracked to pieces. The only lids we could find to fit our cans were online at $39.99 each -- for that, I would just buy new cans! We haven't yet, because we'd just got those cans a few months before and they're still perfectly fine. We have a garage so lids aren't absolutely essential, so we've just been living without them for the last three years. I know the garbage men hate it on rainy days, but as far as I'm concerned it's their own darn fault!

That's a good idea...i'm wondering why they won't let you leash the lid to the can? Can't imagine what would go wrong with that..

Maybe that opportunity fund could be used to start a new business :-)

Over here, as part of our yearly local government charges we are supplied with a plastic rubbish bin (collected wkly) and a recycling bin (collected fortnightly). The lids are attached with a hinge at the back. You have to pay - can't opt out.
